Hello advice gods and goddesses,this is about my boyfriend's mum. Our birthdays are coming up soon (same day) and we'll be celebrating together. All the "hard facts" I have on her are:- she likes to cook and shop for food (especially fair, organic, fresh stuff)- she's artsy (draws on a digital pad currently)- she's a teacher, and very eager to educate herself on teaching methods etc.- she enjoyed watching/reading the handmaid's tale, and is currently getting into Nigerian literature- she likes to sleep in late- she likes to get dressed up sometimes, painting nails and all that- she likes to go travel, mainly camping and hiking trips- she's very nice and funny as hell, but I don't know what to do with that infoSo far I've gotten her a book that I think she'll enjoy, and some reusable make-up-remover-pads but I want some more little things, or maybe a big thing. (Last year I gave her a painted mug, some tea and a magazine subscription). I really wanted to buy her this lamp but unfortunately it's not for sale right now. I'm also thinking about getting "Alias Grace" for her, but maybe one book is enough... now I have no idea what to do. Just for reference of what I'm already getting, I've got him an engraved lighter and some personalized guitar picks. For the last gift, I was going to get him a couple of posters from an anime we've been watching together, but the Etsy shop I was going to get them from just went on vacation/closed.I'm actually blind, so shopping for posters and visual things like that can be pretty difficult for me, but i'd really like to get him some sort of poster or decoration because he's been wanting to put up more stuff in his bedroom for a while. My SO has been feeling down and out of it a lot lately, and as the emotionally reserved man he is, there’s not much he let’s me know I can do to make him feel better because he doesn’t want me to stress over him, BUT his birthday is coming up in the next couple of weeks and I’ve been thinking about painting a somewhat huge portrait of him, it’s one of my favourite pictures of him that I took where he’s smiling and happy, to gift it to him for his birthday. Just as something to cheer him up. I love painting, and he knows it so it’s exciting.My problem is that I’m just nervous about his reaction and whether he’d want something like that as a gift. You might think of course it’s nice to receive an artwork of yourself, but I’m just wondering if it’s too much, or too intense of a gift given that 1. I plan on making it large in size, and 2. Noting in mind that he’s more into practical gifts if necessary, but by choice, he’s naturally more of a giver of gifts than a receiver (we usually spend is birthday out > gifts, his preference).I’m a very sentimental person and he’s aware of how much I love my arts so I don’t think it’s weird coming from me, but rather I’m not sure if it’s what he wants ,something that personal and of himself, and it would be a pity if I gave it to him and he didn’t know what to do with it after.And no, I can’t ask him because it’s supposed to be a surprise.So, what would you think? Should I stick to a practical gift? Do you find this idea cheesy?
