Hi guys! I wanted to get some input from real people out there. I (F24) was planning on painting a paint-by-numbers kit for my boyfriend (M28) for our 2 year anniversary. It’s a really beautiful photo of us in front of Half Dome in Yosemite.As far as I can tell, my boyfriend loves gifts and the whole idea of gift giving. He remembers the first time we met, our first date, our half year anniversaries, and he loves buying me stuff whenever he’s out, or we’re at the store together, etc. Whenever a holiday or birthday comes up, he literally is like a little kid (I adore it) and asks me if I want one of my gifts early, and I really think him giving that joy to someone makes him happy. For Christmas, I laser cut him a metal leash holder that was in the shape of him and his dog, and he mentioned later that day that he really appreciated that I handmade something for him.All that said, the main reason I’m asking this is because he’s also said before that he likes “useful” gifts. I’m worried that he of course would act like he loves the painting, but really he’d be like “what am I supposed to do with this?”So, I’ll continue trying to subtly hint and gauge his reaction, but what do you guys think? So my BF loves extreme water sports. Current obsessions are free diving, surfing, kitesurfing. He is the type of person who gets everything he wans and the things he needs is just expensive gear for his hobbies. He forbade me to get him anything expensive - i was thinking of a freediving course (as he mentioned how he wants to do one) but they range from 150 to 270 pounds. As COVID is a thing, experience days like massage sessions, whisky tours, any night out in town, are somewhat out of the question as he is asthmatic. My SO has been feeling down and out of it a lot lately, and as the emotionally reserved man he is, there’s not much he let’s me know I can do to make him feel better because he doesn’t want me to stress over him, BUT his birthday is coming up in the next couple of weeks and I’ve been thinking about painting a somewhat huge portrait of him, it’s one of my favourite pictures of him that I took where he’s smiling and happy, to gift it to him for his birthday. Just as something to cheer him up. I love painting, and he knows it so it’s exciting.My problem is that I’m just nervous about his reaction and whether he’d want something like that as a gift. You might think of course it’s nice to receive an artwork of yourself, but I’m just wondering if it’s too much, or too intense of a gift given that 1. I plan on making it large in size, and 2. Noting in mind that he’s more into practical gifts if necessary, but by choice, he’s naturally more of a giver of gifts than a receiver (we usually spend is birthday out > gifts, his preference).I’m a very sentimental person and he’s aware of how much I love my arts so I don’t think it’s weird coming from me, but rather I’m not sure if it’s what he wants ,something that personal and of himself, and it would be a pity if I gave it to him and he didn’t know what to do with it after.And no, I can’t ask him because it’s supposed to be a surprise.So, what would you think?
