#gifts - #Need a recommendation: history about domestic life

I'm looking for gift books for my SIL that discuss the history of domestic life across cultures, with a particular emphasis on the items and architecture that reflect people's day to day tasks and experiences. For example, Japanese architecture emphasizes light weight materials due to the risk of earthquake, etc. Beyond that, she is interested in household items- not so much art or decorations- more like cooking equipment that was unique to specific dishes of the time or items that hang up clothes or baby bottles, etc. She is interested in the history, design, and architecture and what an average person's life would be like using these items. She has a preference for American and European history, but is interested in any culture where the people had built structures and a distinction between what is usually remembered and the domestic life of servants, women, children, etc. It would be great if the book contained pictures. Any recommendations? via /r/Gifts https://www.reddit.com/r/Gifts/comments/a6jdz1/need_a_recommendation_history_about_domestic_life/?utm_source=ifttt
