#gifts - #Help! Upgrading home strength equipment for brother.

My brother has been into strength training for a little bit now. He goes to the Gym but also spends a lot of time living with our parents and has his own weight set there. Which restricts the size of things as he's shacked up in his old childhood bedroom. From what I can tell he's outgrown his current set up, and he doesn't have heavy enough weights at home. Plus the bar is bending quite a bit atm. I presume that this is supposed to happy but I'm not sure if it will cope with heavier amounts.I was thinking about replacing what he's got. I presume that all I need to do in terms of weights is make the plates denser. So have 10kgs instead of 5kg which is currently the largest he currently owns. I also had a brief look at bars and they seem to be different shapes. Not sure if they are specific to benching or curling, and if it actually makes a difference. Just wondering if there is anything in particular that I should be avoiding or looking for in a new set. Or if a new set is the way forwards and he would benefit more from something else or some accessories. via /r/Gifts https://www.reddit.com/r/Gifts/comments/7l9dvp/help_upgrading_home_strength_equipment_for_brother/?utm_source=ifttt

#gifts - #Gift ideas for homebody boyfriend?

My boyfriend is a huge homebody, but not house-proud (t/n: messy). I'm having trouble getting him an appropriately perfect Christmas gift. I want to give him something that reflects his interests and benefits his home - without being too pedantic about it.He's interested in classical music, Australian Aboriginal art/culture (he's Aboriginal himself), video games, Marvel tv shows/moves. He also hates summer (tough in Australia) and his fashion tends towards former-goth style.Any great ideas? via /r/Gifts https://www.reddit.com/r/Gifts/comments/7l9nqg/gift_ideas_for_homebody_boyfriend/?utm_source=ifttt

#gifts - #Help! Gift for a *very* hard to shop for early-20s male.

He is very religious, to the point of not really appreciating anything of material value, and really doesn't do much besides study religious texts (yes, I'm serious). He goes to school for biblical studies and if he's not studying for classes he's probably reading the Bible. He is also very firmly rooted in the belief that he is one of the few who has religion "figured out", so I wouldn't trust myself to get him anything religion-centric.On to what I'm thinking, he will probably want something practical, but I also want it to be thoughtful as he is family and I appreciate him. He lives in a very, very cold city and rents a room with a family. If you have any ideas for good house stuff or cold weather equipment that wouldn't be readily available given that he's living with a family or he has the basics, I would really appreciate it - or really any other ideas. Thanks in advance! via /r/Gifts https://www.reddit.com/r/Gifts/comments/7l6mgf/help_gift_for_a_very_hard_to_shop_for_early20s/?utm_source=ifttt

#gifts - #An influential digital (read: easy and fast) type of gift for kids in the 3-7 age range

So you've procrastinated buying a gift for your nephew or young cousin or friend's kid. You need something that you can buy now and give by Monday, and you want your gift to stand out and be meaningful. One product niche you may not have heard about is digital read-aloud picture book libraries.Being a strong reader who enjoys reading is one of the most life-altering qualities a young person can have. Through literature, you can find characters who have been through what you are going through and can help you through a tough period. Through nonfiction, you can learn about the world and the opportunities it offers, discover the path that gives you the most joy, and become an expert. What stops kids from becoming voracious readers? The process of learning to read can be extremely frustrating, especially in school where kids are often at very different levels and can feel frustrated or embarrassed if their classmates appear to be ahead of them. This can cause them to not ask questions and to stagnate and can create a bad first impression of reading. How many people did you know in HS who were perfectly proficient readers but who'd never choose to read on their own? That attitude 9 times out of 10 is a result of negative experiences while they were learning to read. Many will carry this feeling about reading with them like an anchor their entire lives. So how do you overcome this pitfall? Tablets are awesome for this because they allow kids to pick up basic skills on their own. Several apps package a library of children's books with tools that allow a young person to experience the power of reading before they are fully effective readers, to pick up basic literacy skills while they go along and to increase the difficulty level as their skills improve. Critically, they can do this independently, choosing to read the books that interest them so they take ownership over the experience. So what does this cost and from which companies can you buy a product like this? I have three recommendations:One More Story (tour video)One More Story offers a smaller library than its competitors (85 books), but each book is set to original music composed by the former music director of Sesame Street. The music and sound effects of the books do a ton of work to immerse pre-readers. The app also individually highlights words when kids listen to books so they draw a connection between the spoken and written word. I don't think any other app does this, and it's meant to parallel the process of pointing at words as you read aloud to a kid, something any kindergarten or pre-k teacher will do because it's proven to make a huge difference.Price: $34.99/year with promocode HOLIDAYEpicWhereas One More Story seems like it was built from an educator's perspective, Epic is more of a Silicon Valley type of app. It targets a broader age range (3-12 vs. 3-7) and has a much larger library with a slicker user interface and allows for up to 4 individual child profiles so if you have multiple kids in their age range, there's extra value. What you gain in flexibility though you lose to some extent in quality. Both libraries include great books, but Epic's selection of read-alouds is of a similar size to One More Story's and the production quality, while good, isn't nearly as good as One More Story's.Price: $79.99/year with holiday sale, no code necessaryLevar Burton's SkybraryThe unique selling point for Skybrary is that it curates a library based on a child's interests. When children first enter Skybrary, they are asked their age and their interests, and Skybrary will narrow the books it features for the child based on those interests and presumed reading level. Skybrary also features many videos featuring Levar Burton that are similar to the videos from his days as host of Reading Rainbow.Price: $39.99/yearYou might wonder why I wrote this. I'm a longtime English teacher, and I feel even in the ocean of educational products available these days, this concept is a winner, and I wish it would catch on in a bigger way because I truly believe it can have a big impact on the reading level and interest in reading of young people and dramatically improve their lives. via /r/Gifts https://www.reddit.com/r/Gifts/comments/7l5t23/an_influential_digital_read_easy_and_fast_type_of/?utm_source=ifttt

#gifts - #In need of last minute Christmas Ideas to make my sad wife’s Christmas extra special this year.

Hello Reddit. I have been a long-time lurker pretty much since the beginning but never felt the need to post until now more than ever. I need some very last-minute help in the form of gift ideas. My wife’s grandmother passed away around Christmas last year and I feel my wife hasn’t been the same person ever since. I have been there for her as support as she heals but I really wanted to make this Christmas extra special for her. With basically a week left till Christmas I have been completely clueless as to what to get her. I have about 100 dollars tops this year. Between health and home needs that is my budget this year. There must be something I can get her that will make her smile when she opens it. She loves old time video games, costume jewelry, and scarves. Every time I search for these things online it is overwhelming. I am not that creative or good at buying gifts. I never was. So, this has been a nightmare and so overwhelming to try and find that one special gift. I don’t want to buy her something that will fall apart in 2 days or not make her smile. Am I crazy to think this can be done for this amount of money? Please provide all those ideas. No idea to dumb or small. I just need ideas. I always wondered when everyone always said RIP to your email box what that meant. Please make mine RIP so I can go through the best ideas and perhaps get that extra smile out of her this year.TLDR - Need a last-minute Christmas gift idea to make my wife smile who lost her grandmother last Christmas. Sorry for any posting/spelling/punctuation errors. I have no idea wth I am doing as I usually just lurk on here. #gifts - #Gift for very practical, hard to shop for grandfather (70s) ?

My grandfather is super incredibly smart with a crazy good memory and quickly tires of hobbies, people, and things. As such, the more practical the gift, the better. One of the problems with buying him presents is that he doesn’t like it if he has to give too much personal information or billing info. Like buying him a Netflix subscription was a huge drama—he refused to use it because he didn’t like that his gift couldn’t be activated without providing billing information. My dad had to just add him his account.I am thinking about getting him a subscription to a VPN but I am afraid it will be a repeat of the Netflix problem.Any suggestions for a gift?He doesn’t like traveling and he doesn’t like going places. He is also not really the sentimental type that will get excited over a digital picture frame or something. In the past his hobbies and interests have included programming (like twenty years ago), woodworking/carpentry, making wine and other booze, and small engine repair. These hobbies go in and out and are hard to keep track of so the more generally useful something is the better. via /r/Gifts https://www.reddit.com/r/Gifts/comments/7kwgsr/gift_for_very_practical_hard_to_shop_for/?utm_source=ifttt

I have to get a present for my nephew this year and I'm having trouble thinking of something. He's a very typical 5 year old boy; he likes super heroes, action things, cartoons, your average-joe 5 year old stuff. His favorite hero is Spiderman, but I've gotten him Spiderman gifts for the past two yearns and want to change things up. Problem is, I don't have a great idea of anything else specifically he is into right now since his preferences change with the winds. What is a generally cool gift for a 5 year old? #gifts - #Which Christmas gift is best?

We are getting a Christmas gift for my visiting cousin (male, single, 40). But disagreeing on the best gift. One option is an InstantPot. He has mentioned a few times wanting to get one and asks us lots of questions about ours. Other option is AllBirds shoes - the comfy all merino wool shoes that are really popular this year.I'm leaning towards shoes since he has a high paying job, plenty of money, and already know about the InstantPot (and could easily get it for himself), so I figure we should get him something that isn't already on his radar. However, my hubs thinks we should get him something that he already knows and wants (I.e. The InstantPot) What do you think? via /r/Gifts https://www.reddit.com/r/Gifts/comments/7kvd1e/which_christmas_gift_is_best/?utm_source=ifttt

#gifts - #Recommendation for a good history periodical? Also for a prestigious wine periodical?

My dad loves reading non-fiction history books. We get him books every year for Christmas and birthday, and I'll get him another book this year if I can't find a good journal or magazine (Grant by Chernow is on his list). I've gifted him all of Dan Carlin's podcasts. But I'm wondering if there's a monthly or quarterly periodical to which I could gift him a subscription. The second part is for my mom. She owns a wine store, and wants to become a sommelier. She's incredibly knowledgeable, but struggled to learn all the information required for the first part of her course. I thought if I could get her a periodical about wines and grapes, she could learn bit by bit, and be a little more prepared for her journey to becoming a sommelier. Thanks for any suggestions!! via /r/Gifts https://www.reddit.com/r/Gifts/comments/7kvg1u/recommendation_for_a_good_history_periodical_also/?utm_source=ifttt

I work in an office with 4 women who buy everyone in the office Christmas gifts, including me. They’re all moms. 3 of them are grandmas.
