We've all known each other for more than a decade, mostly through our husbands who have all worked together at one time or another. All of us have kids except one and all of us are in our late 30s/early 40s. We don't see each other nearly as much as we once did and, frankly, I'm not thrilled about exchanging gifts, but that's a different story. (TL;DR: I'm 40, I have two kids, and I don't need ANY MORE STUFF. I would have been fine with pooling our money and buying something for charity for the holidays.)We usually get together before Christmas, but schedules and sickness didn't permit that last month. Now, I know I have to get gifts for these ladies because I discovered that at least two had already bought gifts for everyone (rather than pooling money for charity)! So here I was feeling sorry for myself since my glasses broke and are held together by wire (had a corneal transplant and i would be blind as a bat without them) and my 20 year old son who has been in a coma since he was hit by a car at 5 years old is currently in the hospital). A very much loved gentleman from my church passed away and I did not get a chance to say goodbye. You'd figure this has been a horrible week. In a way it was very emotionally draining. I was thinking, you get older no one gifts you anything (I'm 40) how I miss being a kid. Then I go visit my cousin in Mexico he's doing rather well but I was helping his wife and neighbor make tamales. The neighbors 2 young kids were helping. Dirt poor, but the joy in those kids made me snap back into place. Sure I have a tough life but I'm not dead and I can still laugh.
